Hello, I live in Florida and I might have to go to New York for a while to work on my marriage. My question is I have a house here in Pasco county and I claim homestead exemption. Now, my mother will continue to live in the house. Can I still claim homestead? Does my mother has to be on the deed? Is it okay if I proove that she depends on me financially?
Thank you very much.
Anne

Hi Guest, If you want to claim homestead exemption, then the property has to be your primary residence. If you add your mother to the property deed, then she will be able to claim the homestead exemption on that property.

Only if you can prove that the home is your primary residence, will it be possible to get the homestead exemption. As for the deed, you will have to add your mother on it so that she can receive the exemption.
