is my 401 k lost?

Posted on: 13th Oct, 2009 11:48 am
back in 1996 i had a 401k with Kept and i moved on to another job to make more money. however, i left my 401k behind me.
about 3 yrs ago i called that company and they told me that, my accound along with some other accounts were sold to another company; never gave me anymore information on my contribution at the time.
Does this mean i lost that 401 K?
thank you kindly!
Hi yoli,

You will have to contact your former employer and ask about the broker of the company that they entrusted your 401k to. You will then have to get in touch with them and ask for the necessary adjustments so that you can continue with your 401k.

If you cannot get any help from your former employer or the broker, then you'll have to contact the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). Here, you may find your lost 401k as the corporation keeps a computerized list of individuals who are entitled for pension plans. In case, if the PBGC cannot help you, then you should try the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA). They will look for your Tax ID for the plan.
