I am paying my sisters Mortgage Payment

Posted on: 20th Aug, 2009 06:43 am
I moved in with my sister when she began having difficult times. I was just recently added to the deed. I have been paying the Mortgage in full for the last 1 1/2. I have all the receipts and they are all in my name. Will I be able to deduct this on my taxes?
I do not think you can dedcut, unless the mortgae is in yoru name

Hi svt,

The mortgage needs to be in your name in order to deduct it from your taxes. You've mentioned that you were added to the property deed but I guess you did not refinance the loan to add your name to it. As your name is not on the mortgage docs, you will not be able to take advantage of the deductions.
