property taxes

Last year (2008) my property taxes increased from $900+ the previous year to $1200, even though my property appraisal went down from $120,000 to $91,000. This year home values have dramatically dropped in my city of Lehigh Acres Fl. Shouldn't my property taxes decrease proportionally with my property value?
Yes you are asolutely correct.

Call the county tax accessors office and ask them for an assesment

Hi cmill!

Welcome to forums!

The property taxes do not always decrease with the proportionate decrease in the property value. In my opinion, you should contact a tax adviser and he would help you in understanding the whole issue. He will also let you know about the amount of taxes you need to pay for your property.

property taxes fluctuate based on a municipality's need for funds to do its business. with home values having dropped, unemployment up and revenues in cities and towns down, you'll find lots of towns, cities, counties, etc. raising taxes to make up for shortfalls in income. they have to pay their police, firemen, et al, after all.

May be thats true.

But where I live the property taxes have dropped but state income taxes have increased

most every city and state have revenue problems these days. they try to solve these problems with cutbacks in programs (many of them vital programs), layoffs, furloughs of employees and the raising of taxes.
we in connecticut can't even get our governing bodies to pass a budget yet...we have no idea what this will bring yet.
