i was discharged from chapter 7- I was current on my mortgage payments then. Now after a few trial payments, I was denied for a modification and now was told to pay the back payments in order to keep the home. I cannot pay it so I am doing a short sale. Can the bank go after me for the deficiency since this is a new debt after the bankruptcy?

If you haven't reaffirmed the mortgage, then the lender won't come after you in order to recover the deficient balance after you short sale the property.
