Applying for home equity loan

Posted on: 04th Feb, 2008 01:08 pm
i purchased a house in 2004. my brother is listed as a co-borrower on the mortgage (at the time was going through divorce and did not have enough income to qualify for the loan). i live in the property and i pay mortgage payments, utilities, etc. can i apply for a home equity loan by myself? if not, what do i have to do? my brother lives on a different continent now.
:)
if your brother is not an owner of the property, then you have the right to transact all business on your own. if he is an owner, you may want to try to obtain power of attorney given his current location.

Hi Anna,

Welcome to the forum.

Is your brother also on the deed? I think your name is on both mortgage and title. So may "apply for a home equity loan" but your brother's approval is also needed.

Best of luck.
