My credit scores have turned to worst! I'm unable to manage my credit card balances … they have gone too high. I also have few inquires on my credit report. I want to get all these cleared. Recently, I was contacted by a credit repair company and they told me that they will be able to help me. But then they will require an upfront fee of $500. Is this legal? Or are they trying to scam me?
Hi Melancholy,
A lot of credit repair companies turn out to be scams. Moreover, this credit repair company is also charging upfront fees which I don't think is legal. I will suggest you to not go for this credit repair company. Rather, you can yourself take steps to pay off the debts and repair your credit. You can check out the given page in order to know how you can repair your credit: http://www.mortgagefit.com/credit-rating/credit-repair.html

Consumer Credit Counseling Services is a nationwide firm that can help you. They are a non-profit concern and they offer wonderful services. Though I've not had occasion to work with them in a few years, their staff goes above and beyond to help people. Do they charge for their services? Sure they do...but not an upfront fee that guarantees absolutely nothing.
You can find them with a simple internet search, and because of their nationwide system, there is bound to be an office local to you.
I wouldn't call these guys you cited as a "scam," but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you discovered them to be scam artists in the long run. There are many firms that take your money and run. Another method to find a reputable firm is to check the HUD website (dot-gov), where you can check their list of authorized counselors. The list is plentiful and covers the entire country.

To improve your credit score, you should have to adopt a successful strategy of paying your debts with the specified limit. The duration must not be exceeded in any debt.
