what is the difference between an initial fraud alert and extended fraud alert that can be placed on credit report?
Carrell,
Initial fraud alert will stay on your credit report for 90 days. You can ask for the alert to be set for your report if you are suspecting that you have been a victim of identity theft.
After the alert is placed you will get one free credit report from all the 3 bureaus.
On the other hand an extended fraud alert or extended fraud victim alert will stay on your report for 7 years. This can be placed on your report if you have been a victim of identity theft & provide copy of identity theft report which you filed with Federal, State or local law enforcement agency.
After extended alert is placed on your report you will get 2 free credit reports within 12 months from the 3 bureaus. Your name will also be removed from marketing lists for pre-screened credit offers for 5 years by the bureaus.

Some more info about the fraud alert; when a business will see the alert on report they will have to verify your identity before providing you with any type of credit. And they may try to contact you over phone as part of the verification process. For this reason & to avoid any delay that may occur in getting the required credit approval you should include your cell number in your alert.
how can i set up fraud alert
You need to contact on the toll free number provided by any of the three bureaus for placing a fraud alert on your report. It is normally a automated voice response system which will ask for your personal information and this process will only take a few minutes to complete.

I would add that active duty military consumers are allowed to add an active duty alert on their reports. Such an alert remains on the report for 1 yr.
