How long does it take one to get information on filing a dispute if you are disputing it directly to the creditor itself. My nephew went into sears to apply for a card, he was told that he should go immediately to the police station that someone is using his social security number and has an account set up under his name. So he did, well the police had all the wrong information on him also, under his real social security number, this other person has a whole history of criminal activity.
This kid is only 20 and his credit is shot at no fault of his own. He is disputing the card with sears, but how long will it take him to get results? Has anyone had identity theft happen before?

It's becoming a very common problem now-a-days. Even we get many such posts in this forum too. It's not possible to specify any period of time. Meanwhile you can take different step to protect your identity theft.
You can ask consumer reporting agency to block the information. They will block the information within 4 business day. Just you need to show them few documents proving your identity, a copy of identity theft report, identification of such information and a statement specifying that the particular information is not related to you.
The FTC website is a great place that can give you steps you can take to start correcting the problem. Going to the police and filing a report was definately the right thing to do. You'll now have to contact any one of the credit bureaus and ask them to place a fraud alert on your credit report. whenever you do this they are required to also let the other two credit bureaus know about it and they will inturn place a fraud alert on there reports as well. Although in all honesty I would probably just contact all three of them anyways. While placing the fraud alerts you can request free copies of your credit to check and see what else might be showing that does not belong to your son.
The FTC has a toll-free hotline set up for people who have been a victim of identity theft. 1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338)
Best of luck, and for anyone else reading this it just serves as a prime example as to why we need to review our credit reports and do everything posible to stop yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft as well.

I am afraid that there is no way to specifically indicate a period of time because the time it takes to acquire results will mainly depend on the gravity of your identity theft case. I would like to suggest that you take the necessary measures while waiting for the results so that you are assured that your identity can no longer be misused. Take the time to learn the post-preventive measures listed on http://www.identitythefts.com/dealing-with-cases-of-stolen-identity/.
I am not sure that there is a way to specifically indicate how long it would take to get results after filing a dispute as different creditors may tackle issues like these in different ways. You could hasten the process though by filing a police report. Also, make sure that you prevent any further misuse of your name and credit by requesting for a fraud alert on your three credit reports. Make sure that this will not happen to you again.
