How often is a Credit Report available?

Posted on: 20th Mar, 2006 11:28 am
I found here that regular monitoring of credit report is required to maintain a good credit history and score. But how often can I get a copy of my credit report?
Hi Williams,

It's good to see that you are so concerned to maintain a good credit history and credit score.

As per Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, you are entitled to get a free copy of your credit report each year from each of the three credit reporting agencies. You may get your complimentary report by visiting annualcreditreport.com which allows the consumers to access their credit report online for free. You may also request for a copy through this toll free number (877) 322-8228.

Apart from that, you are entitled to get a free copy of your report each year if you are in any of the following circumstances -

  • You have been denied from getting a loan because of the information in the credit report. In that case you can request a copy within 60 days of being denied.
  • If you are unemployed and you are looking for a job.
  • If you are receiving public assistance.
  • You suspect some errors in your report due to fraud or identity theft.
  • You could not get employment because of the information on your credit report.

If you fail to qualify for a free report as you have already taken a report in the year or for some other reasons, you can still get it against a small charge. The amount varies from state to state and is near about $8.00 or $9.50 or between the two or any of the two.

God bless you.

Can I get the credit score along with my credit report for free?

Hi Williams,

Although your credit report can obtained without any charge but you may have to pay a fee to get your score. It is usually $5 and $10.

You can request for your score whenever you ask for a copy of your credit report.

God bless you.

Hi Williams! You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus every year. So if you wish to check your credit reports for free, you can do so every four months. If you want to conduct a credit check more frequently though, I would suggest that you sign up for a credit monitoring service instead. This will give you unlimited access to your credit reports as well as your credit score.
