Hello… I want to buy a home soon. So I got a copy of my credit report. There is a State Tax Lien on my credit report where I got paid too much unemployment a few years ago. As soon as I got the letter from the unemployment office, I called and set up payments with them. No one ever told me that this would be on my credit report. The money was paid back within months as I had agreed. I called the unemployment office and they mailed me a Judgment Lien Release Document. I called the county where the lien was and they said there was nothing that could be done to get this off of my record. Can someone please help me? What do I do?
Hi Tyler,
Any negative item like a lien will remain in your credit report for 7 years though you've paid it off. So, your state tax lien will remain in your credit report unless 7 years are complete. I don't think you will be able to remove it.
Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Tyler!
Welcome to the forums!
It is true that any negative item will remain in your credit report for 7 years. However, as you have the Judgment Lien Release Document, it won't create any problems for you when you apply for any kind of credit.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

The information that has been offered is correct. Check your state Dept of Treasury. It will list the SOL on their website.
You can send a good will letter. I have heard of successes but only after 1 year has passed after it was paid. YMMV.
You could try to dispute the lein and get it removed, but this is unethical because the lein was valid. There are always methods ethical or otherwise to make things happen.
