Negative item

Posted on: 01st Oct, 2012 02:23 am
My girlfriend has the worst possible credit. She has 24 negative items listed in her credit report. I want to help her repair her credit. I personally have a good credit so I don’t know how to handle this. What do I do? Where do I begin?
Hi Sallie,

Negative items will have a serious negative impact on your girlfriend's credit report. She can dispute some of the old negative items in her credit report and get them removed. She should even check out the SOL period for such debts in her state. If the SOL period is over, then no one will be able to take any legal actions against her regarding those debts.

Thanks,

Jerry

Since you do not have experience to help your girlfriend out, it would be good to find a personal finance expert for her.

The best possible way to repair credit is to pay down the debts. In addition to this, you can also try finding out if there are any such negatives which can be disputed from the credit report. Like, if there are any debts which have past the Statute of Limitations. You can dispute the debts which have past the SOL.

There can be some debts which the collection agency may not be able to validate. SO, you can ask for debt validation from the collection agency, or debt verification letter to the creditor. If not validated or verified, you may be able to dispute these debts, and thus remove the negatives from the credit report.

Hope this helps.

You can actually help your girlfriend in repayment of the previous debts to make credit score better. Once she will start paying the debts, credit score will start improving.

I would agree with skydendredge as well. If you do not have any experience or expertise in handling such affairs then you can certainly get in touch with a personal finance expert and get all issues resolved.

You can begin by helping her figure out how much money she can designate to go toward paying off her debts. Then, if she is still utilizing credit cards, help her refrain from using them, especially during this time when the goal is to free her of debt. Also, you and your girlfriend can take advantage of resources that do not require any payment, which could help you keep track of her finances. Also, you should ask her to check credit report and score from time to time and prioritize accordingly.
