is there a free credit score?

Posted on: 20th May, 2010 02:22 am
Hi, I've heard somewhere that one can now get a free credit score. is it true?
Hi Shirley,

According to the Fair Credit reporting Act (FCRA) you are entitled to get a free credit report once a year from www.annualcreditreport.com , but free credit scores are not available.

You can also get your score from the credit bureaus after paying a fee as set by the Federal Trade Commission. There are many such cites which claim that they are going to provide free credit score, but these may not be authentic. So, it is better to pay and get the score from either the credit bureaus, or annualcreditreport.com.

Thanks,

Sandra

Hello Shirley,

You may not get a free credit score as such. However, according to the new financial reform if you get rejected for a job or a new credit card or loan, you will be able to get a free copy of your credit score.

Thanks,

Lydia

There are literally hundreds of credit scores floating around out there, but none of them are completely "free" at the moment. As Lydia mentioned, we'll have to see how the new legislation plays out.

In the meantime, don't get duped into buying a generic credit score from one of the credit bureaus or anyone else. If you're going to pay for your credit score, make sure it's your FICO score and get it from myFico.com.

You can get a free credit score from: "www.creditkarma.com"

You can not get all three credit scores for free, only one, and the data used to generate the score is from Transunion.

The score is not the same as you would get with a mortgage credit report, but, it will give you an idea where you stand.

The score you can get from creditkarma is good for just what John says - giving you an idea of where your real FICO score will fall. Don't rely on it for anything more than that.
