I got separated in 2006. My divorce was finalized in 2007. I moved out in 2006 and did not claim any mortgage interest for that year. Filed as Head of Household instead while renting a home. My name, however, was not removed from the title until the Quit(Quick?) Claim was filed when our divorce was finalized in 2007.
So...since I have not claimed mortgage interest for 2006, '07 and '08 does that qualify me as a first-time home buyer?

your overall best bet is to discuss this with either a tax advisor or the irs directly. obviously, irs.org - its website - will be cheaper and faster than consulting with a taxman.
