Hi there, I'm a first time home buyer. I applied for a mortgage on my own but the lender asked for my husband’s signatures. Why does the lender require my husband sign for a loan I am applying for?
Hi Mercia,
Are you living is a community property state? If yes, then the lender can ask for your husband's signatures as he will have rights to that property. If you're not living in a community property state, then the lender cannot ask for your husband's signatures. In such a situation, you should speak to your lender and clarify the matter.
Take care

I gather that no explanation was given to you upfront? That's ridiculous, frankly...any loan officer with an iota of a brain would surely let you know why something is required. If you cannot get a satisfactory answer, I suggest that it might behoove you to take your business elsewhere. Another option, of course, is to speak with someone else who works for that lending institution - preferably someone with better knowledge of how to work with people.
