Homebuyers Tax Credit

I found the following excerpt (placed in quotation marks) on this page, and it is the closest, most relevant info I've found to help me qualify for first time homeowners tax credit.

joyce sanders, you can not get the credit but your ex-wife may be able to if she can buy another house. Even though she has owned a home in the past 3 years and would not normally be eligible for the $8,000 tax credit, the displacement due to divorce allows her to be eligible.

On the day of my divorce in 2009, I returned to my maiden name and signed over my joint tenancy on my previous home over to my ex. Then purchased a home for myself in July 2009. Do I qualify due to displacement? I had also heard of a divorced woman who qualified as a "new owner" under her "new name", but could that have been rumor and she may have qualified because of displacement?
Hi av!

Welcome to forums!

As far as I know, if you had owned a property in your name in the last 3 years, then you won't be able to qualify for the first time homebuyer's tax credit. In your case, as you've returned to your maiden name, I would suggest you to have a word with your tax adviser and take his opinion in this regard. He would let you know whether or not you would be able to qualify for the tax credit.
