My husband passed away leaving credit card debt. The debt was in his name only we live in Florida. Can credit card companies come after me for the money? Can they lien my home? What should I do? It was alot of debt. I have my own student loans and car payment.
kathy, if the credit cards were his alone, then the creditors need to back off - you will not be held responsible for the balances due. if you were a joint owner of the accounts, however, you will be responsible. by the same token, though, their ability to place liens would be negated if these were his cards only.
as for the title, check with your attorney, but there's no need to change anything now. i'm assuming that if there's probate, etc. that there will be a change in title to the home coming that way. the only way you can change who is obligated on a loan is to refinance; not what you probably want to do at the moment, either.
