I was divorced from my husband last summer and was awarded a property he owns in Florida, he was suppose to have it transferred to me in November this year I currently live in Florida but not on this property, he is over due to getting me the deed. He says he has to pay the back taxes before he can transfer the deed to me, Is that true? I spoke with a Title Attorney here in Florida and he said that a title in Florida can be transfered and the back taxes will just follow it, is that true with someone who lives in Massachusetts
Thank you

Hi cwaelty,
If the title attorney has said that in Florida, one can transfer property with back taxes, then you should believe him. And if the property is located in Florida, the real estate laws of Florida will be taken into consideration. You should remember that if the property is transferred to you with back taxes, you will have to pay them. So if you can afford paying the back taxes, you can ask your ex-husband to transfer the property to you.
Thanks

Thank you for your reply, I can not afford to pay thr taxes so I guess I am stuck again
Welcome Cathy Waelty,
As far as the taxes are concerned, I think you will be able to pay the taxes in installments as well. So you can contact a tax adviser and check out the options that you have.
