Adding a name to mortgage

Posted on: 24th Jul, 2006 07:34 pm
can i add my name to the deed of my boyfriend's house in order to apply jointly for a home equity loan? is there a time frame for my name to be on the loan to do this?
Hi,

I think you can add your name to the deed of your boyfriend's house for the loan. But being on the title is not always a necessity.

You can jointly apply for the loan with your boyfriend being the primary borrower, as he is the owner of the property and you being the co-signer. That is, if he fails to pay off the loan in time, it's your responsibility to pay down the mortgage debt.

Thanks,

Sara.

Hi,

As far as I know there is no such time frame to add your name on the loan. It depends on how fast the legal formalities are done to add the name.

thanks.

Hi,

It is true that you can be a co-signer and apply jointly for the loan. But if your boyfriend is already on the loan and you want to add your name to it, then you will have to add your name to the title. The title should be transferred from your boyfriend to you and your boyfriend.

It's for you to decide how you want to divide the property. If you own the home jointly then both of you will get equal shares. Or else, you may also get a certain percentage of the property.

Thanks,

Caron.
