My mother is currently the breadwinner of the house and wants to take her husband off the joint ownership for the house since he is spending money fast as if he has a high paying job and getting himself into debt with bad investments.
Are there any other options for this than refinancing the home? About making changes with the mortgage lenders?

the first thing your Mom ought to do is to sit down with her husband and explain the irresponsibility of his actions and the negative effect it can have on their relationship. counseling might help, with the right counselor.
the current lender can be approached to discuss the situation, but how far they can go is hard to say. the involvement of legal counsel might help too, but then again, it could cause things to deteriorate further.
i'd say the best bet is my first suggestion, but that's just my opinion.

It's really not bad , their relationship that is - I apologize for misleading you there - it's just that this has always been his personality , we just need to secure the house at this point ; should he become irrational in the future then it is better that she has the authority over the house.
BTW how am I supposed to change my avatar as well as my name ; that's my Yahoo name but not my avatar.

Hi GCT!
Welcome to Forums!
If your Mom wants to remove his name from the Mortgage, then I think, the lenders will ask her to go for a refinancing. However, your Mom can have a word with the lender. If she has regularly paid her debts on time, might be that he will consider her case and try to find some other way out. But chances are less. If she wants to just transfer the title of the house in her name, then I think she can ask him to sign a quitclaim deed in her name.
