We live in Illinois right now and want to move to Minnesota. We will have jobs before we buy a home there. My question is should I get pre-approved in Illinois through our current institute or get our mortgage through an institute in Minnesota?
Get pre-approved wherever you want.
The best company/person to do your pre-approval is the Lender and Loan Officer who is best at what they do and are licensed to do business in Minnesota.
You may have no idea whom is the best.
So, ask several and decide who you want to do business with.
If you want, contact Shane Milne.
He is the best I know.
He is in CA and does loans nationally

Hi sbn!
Welcome to forums!
I agree with what John has said. You can get pre-approved with whichever lender you feel like. If you meet all the required criteria, you will be able to get qualified for a loan. This community has a large number of lenders. You can seek a no obligation free mortgage quote from them.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

You can get state wise list of lenders in our lenders section. If you have all the supporting documents ready with you, you may be pre-approved for the mortgage loan.
