My fiancee's name still remains on the mortgage of the home he purchased with his ex wife. For whatever reason, the home was not addressed in the divorce decree. We recently learned that she hasn't been making on time payments on the mortgage and his credit has now began to suffer as a result. Is there any way to have his name removed from the mortgage so that there's no further damage to his credit? We are looking to build a home in the next 1-2 years and will not be able to achieve our goals if she continues on the path she's on.
hi kellybelle,
your fiancé should contact his ex-wife and ask her to refinance or assume the mortgage in her name. once she does so, your fiancé's name will be removed from the mortgage doc. however, as she is already delinquent on her mortgage payments, she may not be able to qualify for a refinance.
