Other credits for 2008 first time homebuyers?

Posted on: 09th Jul, 2009 10:52 am
Hi all,

I recently purchased a home in November of 2008 and I was wondering if there have been any changes in the past few months that would make me eligible for any goverment handouts or tax credits that didn't have to be paid back. I understand it was a $7,500 credit that had to be paid back over 15 years, but it seems to me the much better deal was for people who bought a home in 2009 received $8,000 wich NEVER had to be paid back. Have there been any changes to help people like me? Or is it just my own terrible luck that I didn't wait 2 more months to receive basically $8,000 of free help? I just had my garage door break which will cost about $1K to replace and I was just hoping to re-do my bathroom for basiaclly the same cost... so I am left thinking how much that $8K would REALLY help me out a lot right now.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. That's a shame. Like I said, I can think of at least 3 or 4 different things that I would consider major purchases and/or improvements that I'd like to make but would only be possible with a few extra thousand dollars that something like this credit would provide me. I will keep checking other sources and sites to see if they say otherwise. This seemed like a good place to start and hopefully I will remain active here.

it's true - the $7500 tax credit which existed in 2008 was just what it claimed to be - repayable in 15 years. there have been no alterations to that. can the government go back and pass new legislation that will overturn that? i suppose they could, but that's something we don't know about at this time. you may want to contact your local representatives and suggest it.

as for the future, there's much discussion going on that the tax credit may be extended, expanded, etc. what will finally happen we don't know, but this idea carries a lot of favor with voters, and guess what motivates our congressmen!
