I lost my job in September, we just lost our manufactured home to the mortgage company and the county is hitting us up for the back taxes. Is there anything we can do? San Diego County. Paul
Hi PTerrell,
In order to pay your back taxes, you need to get in touch with the county tax collectors office and arrange a repayment plan. You can negotiate with them to lower the outstanding balance and pay it off through affordable monthly payments. However, when you negotiate to settle the back taxes, you need to provide documents in support of the your settlement offer. You will have to show that you are in financial hardship and cannot make pay off the taxes in full. You may also get help from a tax professional in this regard.
