hi vickianapena,

your mother can file bankruptcy though she is on ssi. she can file bankruptcy and get her credit card debt discharged. however, prior to filing bankruptcy, i would suggest your mother to negotiate with the credit card companies so that she can get an affordable payment plan to pay off the dues.

thanks

I'm in league with James here; owing the debt, she ought to try to find a way to pay it back. If that's impossible, then of course, bankruptcy is an option. Changing the phone number is devious, and creditors have ways to get information even when that's done; so she ought to avoid that.

Bankruptcy isn't anything to be fearful of, and it can do precisely what she'd like to do - give her a fresh start financially. That's not suggesting she go back out later and get new credit, but it would eliminate the need to worry about this existing situation.
