Hello,
My family experienced a layoff over a year ago and have recently relocated to become employed again. We left a residence in Colorado and are currently renting a house in Virginia. Carrying both a monthly mortgage payment and paying monthly rent is tough. Our mortgage is current, but we are still reeling from debts from the layoff. We are currently under a debt settlement plan. My question is whether there is anything we can do to modify/ease our mortgage payment?

Hi Heather, welcome to the forums,
Unfortunately if you are currently on a debt settlement plan than your chances of refinancing your mortgage for a lower payment are very unlikely.
Have you tried negotiating with your lender at all? I know it seems so simple but most people over-look this option which would be the best for all sides if they agree to work with you. Just simply tell them that you are considering just letting it go into forclosure if there isn't anything that they can do for you. If they can't help you themselves they may be able to refer you to one of the various government modification programs that may be available to you.
Best of Luck,
