I am being sued by a creditor. I owed $2600 and they are suing for almost $22,000. First off can they do that? And secondly if they win that judgement can they put a lien on my house if its in both my name and my husbands name being as the judgement is against just me?
They can sue for anything (sort of).....but they would have to prove the entire amount is due (if you don't show up in court they most likely will be awarded what they ask for). If a judgement is awarded to the creditor in most circumstances they can place a lien against the property.
Welcome Herzo1se,
They are suing you for a huge amount. You should first ask them to give you a proper reason as to why they want to sue you for such a huge amount. If you're one of the owners of the property, then they can place a lien on it in order to get back their dues. However, they will have to file a lawsuit and get a judgment in this regard.

If the lien is placed on the home then wouldn't it negatively affect my husband. The lawsuit is against just me. I didn't think they could do anything to negatively affect him.
Hi Herzo1se!
Welcome to forums!
The lien may not have a negative impact on your husband's credit report as it is against you.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
