I own my home free and clear, and was contacted recently by a hospital's collection agency about some really old debt. They threatened to put a lien on my home in order to collect. Is this possible? Or is it simply an idle threat?
Should I put my house in my son's name to prevent this from happening?
I am in MS by the way.

Welcome beaveranger,
If you owe the debt to the collection agency, then they can sue you for it and can get a judgment to place a lien on your property. If they had already filed a lawsuit against you, then you shouldn't transfer the property to your son as it will be considered fraudulent.

No lawsuit filed as of yet. Just a typical scare call so far.
Hi Guest!
Welcome to forums!
As the lender has just given you a scare call, you may try to transfer the property to your son. You should contact a real estate attorney and take his opinion in this matter.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

How old is the debt? Cause after so many years they can't collect. Sounds like you need to contact a attorney for this.
The debt is from 1997 - 2000
I was informed that these companies can only go back for 4 years. The hospitals usually sell off the debt to these collection agencies for pennies on the dollar and they try scare tactics to get you to pay it off so that they profit.
Is there any merit to this information?

Hi beaveranger,
It is true that if the creditor does not receive his dues from your end, then he will sell off the dues to the collection agency who will in turn harass you for the payments.
Thanks
