I have talked to several different companies and they all want anywhere from 1000 to 1500 upfront fees.
What is the best way to go and with who?

Welcome jljackson,
Mortgage modification companies cannot charge upfront fees. They can only charge their fees once they have modified your loan terms after negotiating with your lender. I would suggest you to negotiate with your lender yourself and try to get a loan modification. Depending upon your financial situation, the lender will let you know whether or not he would accept your request.

Thanks for you answer. I have also talked to lawyer's office and they want 1500 up front with my paperwork filled out.
I am kind of afraid of all of them.
