Will I owe or be subject to a lien‏

Posted on: 06th Jul, 2010 02:21 pm
I just bought a home, made the 1st payment on it last week. I want to marry my girlfriend who has a $117k judgement for her involvement in a crime committed 5 years ago that she has been faithfully paying off. They [the insurance company of the company she worked for where the crime occurred] have told her that if she could come up with $30k, they would satisfy the debt. I imagine that they would then claim the rest as income for her.

My question is if we get married, will they force me to be liable for the debt and can they put a lien on my house that is in my name only?
Hi Clarence!

Welcome to forums!

The judgment is against your girlfriend. Though you marry her, the insurance company cannot come after you in order to recover the dues. However, if you add your girlfriend to the property deed, then the insurance company may be able to place a lien on your property in order to recover the dues.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
