My mother in law passed away around 2 years ago. It was my brother-in-law's responsibility to keep her affairs in order. He has moved into her home that is part of the estate and claims he is paying all the bills on time. I overheard him telling someone that he was 7 months behind in the mortgage. Is there a way for me to find this out before my wife does so we can get it caught up before probate? I'm sure he won't be honest with me if I ask him?
If you want to know whether or not the mortgage payments are made on time, you will have to contact the lender regarding it. It is the lender who will be able to let you know about the status of the loan.
Hello Cathy,
Not all of each monthly house payment is going to be applied directly to principle as interest has to be accommodated for. Some of the payment will go toward principle and some of it is allocated to interest for that particular month.

You are right that your brother of your wife never will tell you about truth. You should contact to that lender who provide them mortgage and he can tell you truth exactly. He can show you last payment and remaining payment of mortgage amount.
