Im hoping someone can guide me, b/c i am getting flat out, ripped off and stolen from. I apologize if this is long....and boring. I simply dont know where to turn, i thought these practices were being outlawed.
I had a Home Depot acct with the "no interest for a year" deal. i was/am unemp and called last Jan 6th to "opt out" of my card b/c the rate was going up to 30%. the girl convinced me not to and extended my grace period until May figuring i'd be working by then. In Feb, the calls started up again, over 85 per month, so bad i had to unplug my phone. every time i spoke to someone it was like starting all over.
After exhausting myself with the folks at Home Depot, i spoke directly to managers at Citi-Corp, one finally suggested i contact the local store and get their approval for another extension and he would agree to it. i wrote a letter to the local mgr, he left me a phone message (which i have) that he agreed, but the mgr had gone back on his word and not agreed. at this point, after 15 - 20 calls and a couple letters i gave up and began focusing on trying to get a job.
A few weeks ago i received a letter from some lawyers regarding the acct, they mentioned court, i wrote them back, explained i was unemployed, attached the letters i had sent, with a detailed description of what has gone on and agreed that court would be a good idea. a week after that i got something in the mail from court that i defaulted. there was no date set as far as i know. i sent them more letters trying to resolve this, and explained i had no idea what the court papers were, they ignored those letters and put a lien on my house the other day that is costing me $$ by the day.
It is important to note that in every single letter i have agreed to begin paying my balance from the Jan 6th date i called to opt out of the acct and was extended until May.
Obviously these companies scrambled to screw me over once i used the word "unemployed"... how do i get this resolved fairly and honestly? i have tried contacting Home Depot to get a transcript of the Jan 6th conversation i had, which would prove me right, to no avail. i have pleaded with the lawyers in the case to research the case and do what is right, they have not bothered. they have tacked on $2,000 of fees and im paranoid they are going to steal my car or hack into my bank acct. this has caused me to become very sick and depressed, adding to the stress i already am overwhelmed with. i am in Massachusetts.

I'd also like to add that my credit was close to perfect before this and i hadnt missed or even been late on a mortgage, credit card or any other payment in 10 years.
Hi twdean,
I can understand what you're going through. The creditor should have considered your situation and given you relief from this harassment as you've already informed them that you're unemployed. In my opinion, you should contact an attorney who can deal with the creditor on your behalf and let you know what steps you need to take in this matter.
Thanks
