ex signed quit claim deed and the house was to sell--95% proceedes to myself and the children- 5% to him...home ended up in a short sale. both our names on the mtg, but he didn't have to attend the closing? only i had to. is this ok?

I don't think it will be a problem if you have alone attended the closing. As both of you are on the mortgage docs, anyone of you could have attended the closing. However if there is a deficient amount resulting from the short sale of the property, then see to it that both of you contribute equally in order to pay it off.
