my timeshare is paid in full, however I owe back
maintenance fees which I haven't been able to pay.
a few days ago it went to resort recovery (a collection agency) and they want an additional 850 on top of what
I already owe.

Hi kamlin!
Welcome to forums!
They can charge you extra fees on your back dues. If you're unable to pay off the balance amount, you should contact the collection agency and try to negotiate with them so that you can get a payment plan to pay it off. You may even ask the collection agency to forgive a portion of the dues. However, it would be completely the collection agency's discretion whether or not they would forgive it.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
