my dad is in a nursing home and my mom is living in their home. i understand that if he passes away first the state will not take the house but if she passes away first the state will take the house to pay for him being in the nursing home. is this correct? and if so, can they do a quit claim deed in my name to keep the home from going to the state? thank you.

If the property is not in your father's name, then the nursing home will not be able to come after the property. If you want to save the property, you can ask your mother to transfer it in your name by using a ladybird deed, if it's valid in your state.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
