We bought a house two years ago. My BIL put it in his name, due to some credit issues. We have always paid for the house out of our account. When he signed the paperwork, it was clear that it was our house.
My question is how would we go about adding our names to the deed. We know that we would not be able to take him off of there, due to the mortgage.

you can go to your local recorders office and file a quit claim deed
to add your partner onto the deed. its a pretty simple form that most
people can do on their own. there most likely be a recording fee
charged by your county to do this... varies by county.
if you currently have a mortgage out on the property, this will not add them onto the loan. if you want to add them onto the mortgage (to add your partner to the financial liability of the mortgage so they recieve
credit reporting, etc. you need to contact your mortgage company.)

Hi justus,
You will have to ask your brother in law to sign a quitclaim deed and add your name to the property deed. Once the deed is filled out, you should notarize it and then record it at the county recorder's office.
Thanks
