My mother-in-law signed over the deed to her home and property to my husband and I 4 years ago with life-time rights and she is now in a nursing home and other family members feel that because we are no longer taking care of her in her home that we should no longer be owners to the property...can any of them take the property legally and if so what can we do to prevent it...we do have a mortgage on this property with her permission and signature....thank you
Hi lildees,
Your mother-in-law has life estate rights on the property. This means that she would be able to stay in the property until death. However, you and your husband are the real owners of the property and your relatives cannot take it away from you without your signatures.
Thanks
