My mom was married to a guy named Tony Hood. He was the only child of his single mother. Him and my mom never had any children. Well Tony died and his mother has died so that makes my mom the last Hood alive. Well she called the people living at this womans house and they just hung up on her so apparently they didn't want to hear from her. Does this mean my mom has legal rights of the property and everything that was left behind? She was calling to find out about her death b/c she is still legally her daughter-in-law. She doesn't know anything.
Hi meganhill,

If there are no other heirs to the property, then your mother can file an affidavit of heirship at the county recorder's office and get the property transferred in her name. You can contact your real estate attorney and take his opinion in this matter as well.

Thanks

"She was calling to find out about her death b/c she is still legally her daughter-in-law."

Because she is legally DIL (read daughter- In -law) of the lady mentioned in the post surely nobody can have an objection about her legal rights to inherit the property.

She can file the affidavit of heir ship with all the relevant documents to local county office and get it done ASAP.
