CAN I HAVE THIS HOUSE

Posted on: 15th Oct, 2009 04:01 pm
I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN A HOUSE FOR TWO YEARS. NO ONE HAS TAKEN OWNERSHIP OF IT. THE HOUSE WAS ABANDED YEARS BEFOR I MOVED IN IT. HOW AND CAN I TAKE OVER LEGALY AND FIX IT BACK UP TO LIVIVG IN SAFLY?
Hi kuykendall,

You should first check with the county recorder's office and find out who actually owns this house. You should also check if there are any liens or encumbrances on the property. You need to contact with the owner and see if he/she is willing to sell off the property to you. At this point in time, you do not have any ownership to this property. You cannot claim adverse possession rights to the house as you have been living in it only for 2 years.

somebody, somewhere owns it. the land records in your locale will tell you who that somebody is.

Go down to the town records room and look up the deed.

You just moved into an abandoned house just like that? That sound sketchy. You really have to do some research on that house. First people to ask are usually the ones living close by. They should be able to provide you with some information about who owns it and who lived in it before.
