how do i do a poa with the power to 'gift to self' i have been advised to make sure it is done when setting up the poa.

You'll have to contact an estate planning lawyer and he/she will help you in drafting a power of attorney with the power to "gift to self". In order to make your power of attorney valid, you must sign the document. Apart from this, the document must be signed by a notary public or signed by at least 2 adult witnesses. You should note that an agent cannot be a witness.
