my mother died and didnt leave a will that i know of and i was told i could file a quit claim deed to obtain ownership of her house, i am her only child and i am trying to avoid paying the costly lawyers fees to go to probate if i can

As your mother is deceased, you won't be able to use a quitclaim deed in order to transfer the property in your name. You've mentioned that she didn't leave back a will. In that case, you'll have to file an affidavit of heirship at the county recorder's office and transfer the property in your name.
