My parents and I just purchased some property using a quitclaim deed. Everything went smoothly until the grantor now wants us to pay the taxes that he failed to pay a year ago. Are we responsible for thoswe taxes eventhough we did not own the property at that time?
Hi janelle,
It is the grantor's responsibility to clear off the back taxes. As you've already purchased the property, I would suggest you to negotiate with your grantor and check out if can share the back taxes with you.

how did you close this loan? did you have legal representation? did you take the property via warranty deed? i'm thinking none of the above, since all taxes would have had to be settled at the time of your closing.
i don't know how easy it's going to be for you to negotiate with your seller now that you're the owners. you'd better check all of your documentation to ensure that you weren't required to undertake responsibility for those taxes.
