Quit Claim Deed

Posted on: 13th Oct, 2008 01:08 pm
I live in the state of IL and would like to add my significant other to my deed in case I die. I would like him to have my house since he lives in it with me now. Would I quit claim a deed to both of us as joint tennants? thank you.
Hi Diane G!

You will have to sign a deed clearly stating that you want the other person as a joint tenant. You can visit an attorney and he/she will tell you about the paperwork.

Thanks.

Hi Diane G!

I think you will have to sign a quitclaim deed to add the other person's name on the deed.

Thanks,

Jerry

Please note that to create a valid joint tenancy in Illinois the deed must read "as joint tenants and not as tenants in common". It is always wise to work with an attorney or title company in these matters.
