I live in CA, my landlord quit claimed the rental to ex-wife, supposedly. I haven't received anything in writing documenting this transaction and my landlord is telling me via phone message that his ex is now the owner and my lease transfers with the quit claim. Is this legal?
I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't be legal. People transfer ownership of property every day, much of it being investment property. A lease is transferable coincident with the transfer of the title, so the ex-wife is now your landlord. That you've not heard anything is a bit odd, but speak with your now-former landlord and see if you can get a handle on where and when to send payments to your new landlord.
As long as you live there, you owe a rent, right? Why should it matter to you where that rent payment goes?

Generally, in a quit claim, a grantor releases all the interests the grantor has in the property. So if there is a leasehold interest (ie a "lease) then that is released to the grantee as well.
