Quitclaim deed

The lawyer has taken a year & still hasnt finished the paperwork to get the house in our name from my mother-in-law. We were planning on adding on to the house once this took place and went as far as talking to the bank to get the loan (which my credit took a hit) and getting the contractors lined up last spring. Now the contractors want to start and its still not in our name. The property taxes have been paid up twice, but the lawyer drags his feet. The surveying has been done as well. Will a quitclaim help to get the ball moving or would this just be an additional expense and more time consuming?
Hi Sheri,

You can ask your mother-in-law to sign a quitclaim deed and transfer the property to you and your spouse. This will make you the owners of the property. Once you become the owner of the property, you will be able to take out the mortgage as well as the contractors can start their work.
