we owned property together joint tenants not married filed quit claim deed and my property taxes went up. county states i own 100% not 50% anymore. when we both owned it we owned 100% together why should the property value change now.
Hi aquaorange!

Welcome to forums!

After the filing of the quitclaim deed, was the whole property transferred in your name? If yes, then you will have to pay the full taxes because now you own the full or 100% property. If the quitclaim deed did not transfer the whole property in your name, then you will have to speak to your legal adviser.

Feel free to ask if you have further queries.

I am still confused about property tax increase after quit claim. My property was bought in 2003 by me and my boyfriend. We live together in this house. For reasons we thought made sense at the time He quit claimed me his half in 2008 I now own his share, i'm sole owner. Why does the county get to reassess my home like I just bought it brand new @ 2008 prices and increase my tax at the houses 2008 value?

Hi aquaorange!

Yes, the county will definitely reassess your property as a transfer has taken place. For now, the property taxes bill will come in your name.

Thanks.
