i signed a quit claim deed over to my husband in 2006. recently i received a bill from the department of revenue stating that i owed the docs stamps on this transfer which is over $1000.00, i wasn't advised of such money due at the time i did the transfer. is this in fact owed? the office where i did the paperwork say that when it's between husband and wife no money is owed. who's right??
Welcome Marilyn,
After a property transfer, you are responsible for the doc stamp fees and you'll have to pay it off. As far as I can understand, it is the Department of Revenue who are correct in charging the dues. You should contact a real estate attorney and take his opinion in this matter.
