my question is: $500 was deducted by quicken loans, after they accepted our application with a congratulatory note that we had been accepted for the refinance of our mortage.
now they have said we have been denied the refinance (more than 30 days from the initial application) can we request the return of our $500 since they are denying our application??

Hi bobby,
Application fee covers the cost of processing your mortgage application. As your refinance has been denied, I think you'll be able to demand the refund of $500 that was charged to you.
Thanks

by all means, ask for it.
No application fees should ever be collected prior to obtaining a loan. Press them for it and you'll get it back. I would hope a firm as large as Quicken would not do something like this.
