my ex wife has a judgement against her and i confirmed that nothing is in my name. i tried to refinance my home but the mortgage company said since we were married at the time, the judgement would have to be paid before i can move forward even if my ex agrees to sign documentation removing her from the deed.

If you live in a community property state, then the lender will consider you equally responsible for your ex-wife's debts. However, if you have been formally divorced, then you will be able to get a mortgage on your own. Nevertheless, it will be better if you could ask your ex-wife to pay off the judgment.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
