Mortgage Interest Deduction

Posted on: 11th May, 2008 02:53 pm
I have a couple of properties which the mortgage loans are under my name. One is my home where I reside, the second one is where my Mother lives. I financed her house under my name for credit reasons, but she is the one who actually makes the mortgage payments. So she does not pay me any rent.

Can she claim mortage interest deduction on her taxes ? Her name is on the title of the home.
Hi celobr,

Welcome to the forums.

I guess you are the cosigner on the loan and your mother is the primary borrower. Now, since your mother's name is on the title and she is the actual borrower, therefore she will be able to get mortgage interest deduction.

Know more on this issue from a previous discussion on Mortgage and taxes .

Take Care

Hi celobr,

Welcome to the forum.

Are you also on the title? If not then how can you be on the mortgage? It may be that you are the cosigner. So if your mother is the primary borrower then she can get mortgage interest deduction on her taxes.

"So she does not pay me any rent." BTW why do you think she should pay rent to you although she is on the title???
